Paulig is one of the top Finnish companies concerning corporate reputation and responsibility

Consumers feel that Paulig is one of the top companies in Finland when it comes to corporate reputation and responsibility, showed a study done by TNS Gallup last fall. Paulig received recognition for the best responsibility image in the category of food companies last week. Paulig’s reputation rose from last year’s third place into a shared second place with Kone.

Reputation and responsibility go hand in hand. Good reputation is built as a result of persistent work, and the list of successful companies also confirms this.

The study shows that the amount of Paulig’s admirers is well above average. Those admirers both appreciate our competence and like our company. Our products and services are considered to be of very high quality, and the success and professionalism of our employees are valued.

The study included 52 Finnish companies from five different categories: bank and insurance, commerce and services, energy, food supplies and industry.

Top 10 companies with the best reputation (TNS Gallup)

1.Fazer Group and Fiskars 2.

New PAULIG SELECTED coffees - flavour design for the international market

More than 1,000 different flavours have been identified in roasted coffee. The unfailing human sense of taste and the enormous array of flavours make producing good coffee a tough job. It’s like top-flight design in which the subject is the taste. The Paulig Selected products crystallise the first-rate expertise in coffee that Paulig has accumulated in 135 years. Cup of Excellence coffee beans, which are among the most sought-after in the world, are used for these luxurious super premium blends. Paulig Selected coffees will go on sale in Finland and Russia this November. Paulig Selected is also the official design coffee for World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

The new Paulig Selected coffees have been created for consumers who appreciate top quality and engaging flavour experiences. They are produced by selecting and sampling the finest grades of coffee. Paulig Selected is Paulig’s opening move in the super premium coffee product category.

“Interest is growing in products of premium and super premium standards and this is one of the trends in the coffee business. Consumers are prepared to invest also in the enjoyment of beverages and flavour experiences as a counterbalance to everyday life. Paulig Selected is an important business card for us from the perspective of internationalisation, as super premium products are in demand in Russia, for example. In addition to the flavour, particular attention has been paid to the packaging design and the visibility of the message,” says Marketing Manager Risto Kalsta.

Taste Design is a demonstration of coffee professionals’ skill

Whereas an object designer shapes different materials in search of optimal forms and functions, Paulig combines different grades of coffee, roasts, café milieus and services with carefully thought-out details to create a coffee experience.

“The taste design of coffee products is based on first-class ingredients and coffee bean flavours; there is no short cut or ready-made recipe. As coffee harvests vary, blends have to be reformulated time after time to achieve the right flavour. The flavour is also affected by the variety of coffee as well as climate and soil, just like wines,” says Chief Taster Marja Touri, whose career path to top talent in flavour design began with Paulig back in the 1980s.

“Paulig Selected coffees are a high point in my career. For the first time, we use rare and valuable Cup of Excellence coffee beans for these. Cup of Excellence is an award granted for the highest quality coffees of the different countries of origin, and they are only available in limited quantities,” Touri points out.

The coffees in the Paulig Selected range have heart and soul: the different flavours and delicate aromas stand out in a unique way.

“Paulig Selected filter coffee has overtones of watermelon freshness, honey sweetness and the full flavour of ripe apricot. The richly aromatic aftertaste of Paulig Selected Espresso features juicy ripe fruits and delicious nuances of roasted nuts,” says the Paulig Selected blends’ Taste Designer Marja Touri.

“A valuable coffee merits a worthy moment and way to enjoy it. A coffee moment is rounded out by the right kind of cup to drink it in and the right accompaniment, like handmade chocolate,” Touri recommends.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Gustav Paulig Ltd

Azaliya Sungatullina, Project Manager, tel. +358 400 757 244,

Marja Touri, Paulig Selected Taste Designer, tel. +358 40 7426 253,

Leena Miettinen, Communications Manager, tel. +358 9 319 8364,

PRODUCTS

Both blends are available in beans and ready-ground

Available from November in well stocked grocery retailers in Finland and Russia.

Coffee market to stay hot in the next few years

Coffee market to stay hot in the next few years

Coffee prices have been at historically high levels for over a year, and the situation is expected to continue for some time. In addition to the fundamentals of supply and demand, coffee prices are increasingly sensitive to macroeconomic factors and speculative interest. Coffee consumption is growing fastest in developing countries such as Brazil and Indonesia and interest in sustainably certified coffees is increasing in developed markets. Finns are diversifying the ways they enjoy their coffee as capsule and espresso based-drinks gain popularity. Paulig is looking for growth in Russia and is expanding its product and service range.

Volcafe’s director for business development and sustainability, Mark Furniss, spoke today in Paulig’s coffee seminar. According to him, several factors influence the price development of coffee.

“In 2011 – 2012 coffee production will fall by about 8 per cent, mostly due to the off-cycle in Brazilian production. With coffee stocks already at low levels, and combined with uncertainty surrounding the global economic situation, coffee prices will continue to be volatile.” said Mark Furniss at the coffee seminar. Swiss-based Volcafe is one of the world’s biggest coffee wholesalers.

With Brazil producing about 40% of the world’s coffee, the market is particularly vulnerable to changes in its output, especially with stocks at their current low levels. The supply of arabica coffee, which Finns are particularly fond of, is likely to be well below demand this year. Demand will continue to grow, especially in coffee-producing countries such as Brazil , Indonesia and India, as well as Russia and Eastern Europe.

“The worldwide market situation is affecting consumer prices also in Finland. However, coffee continues to interest consumers and the ways of consuming are becoming versatile. Paulig will continue to bring new and interesting options for coffee lovers”, said Elisa Markula, Paulig’s Managing Director for the Coffee Division.

Responsibility in the heart of coffee production

Responsibility/sustainability is becoming a more and more important factor in securing global coffee production.

“Small farmers produce over 70 per cent of the world coffee, and their know-how and wellbeing influence the future of the coffee industry. The growth of production can be influenced with good, simple farming methods, such as pruning and fertilisers, which have the ability to double yield in some situations. With the corresponding effect on farm incomes, these improvements are a vital part of improving sustainability in the coffee sector,” says Volcafe’s Mark Furniss.

Sustainable development can also be promoted through various certification schemes. Coffee with responsibility certification already accounts for roughly eight per cent of global consumption, and demand is growing sharply. The leading certification systems in the coffee sector are UTZ CERTIFIED, Fairtrade, Organic and Rainforest Alliance.

“Paulig’s aim is to ensure the responsibility of all our coffees throughout the production chain from bean to cup. Among the main ways of influencing this are to improve traceability and operations in the countries of origin and in the procurement chain. We are purposefully working on the traceability of all the coffee we buy in cooperation with our partners,” Elisa Markula says.

Paulig is investing in growth and new market segments

Finland’s leading coffee company Paulig is deploying dynamically in the Russian market and has recently opened a roastery of its own in Tver. Paulig is now one of the leading marketers of roasted coffee in Russia. In terms of sales value, Paulig is the market leader for genuine coffee there, and in terms of sales volume it places second (Nielsen Russia 12/10 - 07/11/2011, 12 cities).

“The wide market area offers considerable opportunities for growth, and local production permits even more competitive operations. In Russia, coffee is seen as a modern, up-to-the-minute product that is well suited to an urban lifestyle. Coffee is drunk there, but only about a tenth as much as Finnish consumers drink per year,” Elisa Markula comments.

In tandem with internationalisation, Paulig is innovatively revamping its range of products and services.

“Filter coffee, which has become a truly trendy beverage in Europe, is still the most popular type of coffee for us, but in addition to this, dark-roast espresso-based drinks and responsibility-certified coffee have grown markedly in popularity. Interest is also rising in top-quality premium coffees and beans. Increasingly often, cups of coffee are being enjoyed out of the home,” as Elisa Markula describes coffee trends.

This autumn Paulig staked out new territory with the launch of the Paulig Cupsolo coffee-maker for use in the home. The coffees and other beverages used in Cupsolo have been tailored by Paulig to match Finnish tastes. The range of responsibility-certified products is also making progress with the Fairtrade and Organic certification of Paulig Mundo. Something new is also in the offing this autumn for the premium product range.

**************************

In 2010 Finns had the highest consumption of green coffee in the world at 11.9 kg per person.

The corresponding figure for Sweden was 7.4 kg, for Estonia 5.5 kg and Russia 1.3 kg.

In Finland, 94 per cent of the coffee sold is light-roast and the remaining six per cent is dark-roast coffee or speciality coffee.

Source: International Coffee Organisation ICO

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Gustav Paulig Ltd

Managing Director, Elisa Markula, Tel. +358 50 5960 978,

Communications Manager, Leena Miettinen, Tel. +358 40 562 7302,

Volcafe Ltd.

Director Mark Furniss, Tel. +41 522 649 465,

Photos for media use can be found on the address http://paulig.materialbank.net/NiboWEB/Paulig/showCartPublicContent.do?uuid=2818642&random=211464&lang=en

**************************

Paulig Group

The Paulig Group is a corporation noted for its high-quality brand products, focusing on seasonings, international food concepts and coffees, operating in 15 countries in Northern and Western Europe, the, Baltic region, and Russia and its neighbouring areas.
Paulig launches the new Paulig Cupsolo capsule coffee-maker for home kitchens

Sales of coffee for brewing in single servings are growing fast

Paulig launches the new Paulig Cupsolo capsule coffee-maker for home kitchens

In Finland, like other parts of Europe, more and more consumers are interested in a quick and easy way to make coffee. In mid-October, Finland’s leading coffee firm Paulig will launch the new Paulig Cupsolo capsule coffee-maker for home use, the coffee and other beverages for which have been fine-tuned by Paulig to match Finnish tastes. The appliance is unique. It can be used to make tea or chocolate drinks in addition to filter coffee and espresso. The range of drinks for Paulig Cupsolo will be augmented in early 2012 with Juhla Mokka and Presidentti blend capsules.

“We want to create new ways of making quality coffee and other beverages in the home kitchen. The range of coffee drunk at home will expand and diversify when different types of coffee can be made conveniently and fast, at the touch of button. Paulig Cupsolo is a splendid option when you want only one cup of coffee or if family members have their own personal preferences. Paulig wants to be both competitive and above all a domestic player in this new segment of the coffee market,” says Gustav Paulig Ltd’s Managing Director Elisa Markula.

Paulig will bring out the new capsule coffee maker in mid-October. “From the start you will be able to use Paulig Cupsolo to make different types of espresso, cappuccino and Tazza chocolate drink. Juhla Mokka and Presidentti coffee capsules will come on sale next February and the range will be expanded all the time,” Markula reports.

The Paulig Cupsolo capsule coffee-maker is technically advanced and high in quality. The new concept is backed by years of research and development work. “We chose the hardware supplier with care because we wanted an appliance capable of producing quality espresso as well as the filter coffee that is important to us Finns. The appliance is the highest in quality of the alternatives we examined and it’s based on a patent developed in Germany,” Markula explains.

Sales of the Paulig Cupsolo appliance in Finland and the Baltic countries are the responsibility of Oy Hedengren Kodintekniikka Ab. According to the company’s Managing Director Mikael Santala, household appliance dealers have received the Paulig Cupsolo with enthusiasm. “Advance sales have been really brisk. Real innovations are rare in this sector. I predict good success for Paulig Cupsolo, as the appliance is high in quality and its diverse range of drinks makes it a match for many users,” Santala says.

Beverage products tailored to Finnish tastes

From the very start, Paulig has played a strong role in the development of coffee and beverage capsules for the Paulig Cupsolo appliance under the leadership of Paulig’s Chief Taster Marja Touri. The coffees are made from quality green coffee beans and their flavour has been checked with care. Development work has ensured that the enjoyment of coffee made with Paulig Cupsolo meets Paulig’s quality criteria and the special requirements of Finland’s soft water.

“The development of products suited to coffee capsules has been an inspiring challenge. We use the same high-quality coffees in the capsules as in our other products. Because of the brewing method, the coffee blends and grinds have been carefully fine-tuned so that the coffee itself will match the taste the consumer expects. The same applies to Tazza chocolate drink and tea,” Touri notes.

The capsules for the Paulig Cupsolo are made in Germany.
Paulig’s new coffee roastery in Tver, Russia has been inaugurated

-->

Paulig’s new coffee roastery in Tver, Russia has been inaugurated

The Finnish coffee company Paulig has opened a new coffee roastery in Tver region in Russia. The production of the new, modern roastery is directed to Russia’s and CIS markets. The value of the investment is over 20 million euros. Paulig is already one of the leading marketers of natural coffee in Russia. In the coffee world Paulig is widely known as a high quality producer. The new production plant has an important role both from the competitiveness and customer service point of view. The building of the roastery began in October 2009.

The wide and growing market area offers Paulig significant possibilities to boost its business to a new level. In Russia especially in big cities consumers are more and more interested in real coffee and coffee consumption is increasing. During the last two years Paulig has invested significantly to the development of its organization and market position.

“Opening of the Tver roastery is an important step for Paulig in increasing our sales and strengthening our market position in Russia. Our aim is to grow. Local production brings us many competitive advantages. We are more flexible with our product portfolio and can more easily develop products that meet the needs of local consumers. Without having to pay high import duties we can also succeed in price competition. In addition, local operation streamlines our logistical operations and improves customer service“, says Elisa Markula, Paulig Group Coffee Division Managing Director.

Paulig’s focus in Russia is especially on high-quality coffees. The roastery in Tver also enables the production of mid-priced coffees as well as private label coffee production.

“Our product range will include a vast selection of real coffees from filter coffee to espresso and turka grind that fit the ways to make coffee in Russia. The new roastery will manufacture Paulig President, Paulig Classic, widely-known and popular among consumers, as well as HoReCa coffee products. This autumn we launched the new Paulig Mokka coffee”, says Alexander Kolkov, Managing Director at Paulig RUS Ltd.

Before deciding to settle in Tver, Paulig searched for a suitable building site from several locations. The industrial area of Borovlevo-2 was geographically well positioned between two logistic centres, Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Also investment attractiveness of Tver region, reasonable land pricing and desire of the regional authorities to provide support and assistance weighed in the selection.

A modern and safe roastery with high quality standards

The production capacity of the new roastery is 6000 tons annually but if needed it is possible to extend the production. The factory employs 40–60 persons and altogether the personnel in the Russian company is today approximately 100 persons.

” The roastery in Russia functions in the same way as the roastery in Finland. The production process is based on the same logic and both factories use ISO 22000-system in managing product safety and quality control. The key personnel has been trained in Finland”, says Operations Director Minna Forsström.

The architecture and the material choices of the new roastery are in line with Vuosaari roastery, which was completed in 2009. The main themes in the design have been timelessness and durability. The building has been designed by the Finnish KVA Architects Ltd. and constructed by the Russian ZAO Haka Moscow.

More information

Paulig Group Coffee Division, Managing Director Elisa Markula, +359 50 596 0978,

OOO Paulig RUS; General Director Alexander Kolkov, +7 985 997 89 72,

Building, architecture, production: Operations Director Minna Forsström, +358 40 702 9896,

Communications Manager Leena Miettinen, +358 40 562 7302,

Photos can be downloaded at the address http://paulig.materialbank.net/NiboWEB/Paulig/showCartPublicContent.do?uuid=2811552&random=748893&lang=en

PAULIG TVER OPENING FACT SHEET

ABOUT COFFEE DRINKING IN RUSSIA

Total consumption of natural coffee is approx. 23 million kilos. Design is also strongly present at our new coffee roastery”, describes Marketing Director Karri Kauppila from Paulig.

“Paulig has a strong influence on coffee and our coffee culture.
“COFFEE & CLIMATE” project helps smallholders to adjust to climate change

High quality coffee production to be started in Russia

The Finnish coffee company Paulig has started to build a coffee roastery in Borovlevo, Tver. The foundation stone of the factory was laid down in October 8. The roastery is planned to be operational in the first half of 2011 and it will serve the Russian and in the future also other CIS-markets. The value of the whole investment is about 20 million euros.

The construction of the coffee roastery in Borovlevo industrial area was started at the end of September. The main constructor is ZAO Haka Moscow and the building has been designed by the Finnish KVA Architects Ltd. The factory’s production capacity is 6000 tonnes annually and it will employ 60 persons at first. The capacity will be sufficient for the next few years and possibilities for an extension will be figured into the construction. Paulig bought the plot of land for the factory in 2008.

– Demand of high quality natural coffee is increasing in Russia despite the economy crisis. We see Russia as a market of great opportunities. Construction during a recession is financially logical and it will give us a good basis to go ahead at full speed when the economic upswing gets under way again. The Russian roastery will substantially improve our competitiveness in Russia, as there is high import duty on finished goods. It will improve our service level and increase flexibility. Exports to the CIS countries will also become competitive, declares Pekka Pirinen, Gustav Paulig Ltd’s Managing Director.

– Paulig will also in future keep focus on producing premium products of Paulig brand. The local production in Tver allows production of quality coffee to mainstream and economy price segments. Besides our own products we can offer private label production services in future, says Denis Smirnov, General Director of Paulig Rus Ltd.

– We have planned several years to open a roastery in Russia and have been looking for a good place to operate. Food industry sets special requirements to the location and environment. In Tver we have found excellent prerequisites for our operations and have received from Tver administration a very positive reception. Until now everything has gone smoothly, thanks Bertel Paulig, Paulig Group Chairman of the Board.

Backround information

Paulig in Russia

Paulig has operated in the Russian markets since 1992 and established sales and marketing company OOO Paulig Coffee in 2008. The company is selling high quality natural coffee product. Sales volume of Paulig coffee is approximately 3000 tonnes per year. The company’s market share is in natural coffee segment 17% in modern retail chains (ACNielsen).

Paulig’s roastery project in Russia in nutshell

In Paulig’s coffee roastery project, both production and needed office facilities are being built in, and operations will start in 2011. The roastery’s production capacity will be of 6 million kilos or over 12 million packets of coffee a year. If demand increases, capacity can be boosted by expanding the production process and extending the building. The production plant will serve the Russian and CIS markets. The main designer is Finnish KVA Architects Ltd. The construction is the responsibility of the Russian ZAO HAKA Moscow. The investment is valued approximately EUR 20 million.

Paulig’s main roastery and head office are located in Helsinki, Finland and they have lately moved to new premises.

Technical details of Paulig Tver roastery

Area of the site 7.5 hectares

The dimensions and premises of the building:

- Surface area approx. 5 040 square metres

- Coffee production facilities 3 350 square meters

- Technical facilities 580 square meters

- Office and social facilities1 110 square meters

- Production volume roughly 51 600 cubic metres

Further information:

Managing Director Denis Smirnov, OOO Paulig Coffee

Managing Director Pekka Pirinen, Gustav Paulig Ltd

Mobile phone +358 400 215433,

Communications Manager Leena Miettinen, Gustav Paulig Ltd

Mobile phone +358 40 562 7302,

www.paulig.ru

8 October 2009

Coffee consumption rising worldwide and holding steady in Finland

Coffee sector deploying in sustainable development projects

International demand for coffee is continuing to grow, particularly in new coffee-drinking countries such as China and India. Production and consumption of coffee are well balanced. Production has increased, particularly in Brazil and Vietnam. In Finland, coffee consumption has held steady.

Annual output of green coffee continues to rise. According to the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), which keeps statistics on output figures, exports of coffee were up by 2.6 on the previous year.

At Paulig’s annual Coffee Seminar on Wednesday 7 October, the latest world market conditions and industry trends were spotlighted. According to the international coffee trading house ECOM Coffee Group Chief Executive Edward A. Esteve, consumers worldwide are increasingly interested in the origin of coffee.

“Growers in the countries of origin are being supported more and more often with responsibility projects aiming to improve the growers’ social and financial position and to forecast the environmental problems caused by climate change. Our long-term goal is economically sustainable development ensuring both the growers and the coffee firms the best possible return and high-quality products. Our target for the future is to be able to trace every batch of coffee we buy back to the plantation,” Esteve declares.

“Coffee growers have reported things like abnormal changes in rainfall and rainy seasons. We are running a number of projects with the future of coffee plantations in mind. For instance, we are working together with the World Bank on carbon-neutral coffee production. We are also developing coffee varieties that will do better and yield greater harvests in changing climatic conditions,” reports Managing Director for Kenya and Tanzania Justin Archer of the ECOM Coffee Group.

Coffee harvest expected to break records

In July this year, exports reached almost 8 million 60 kilogram sacks of coffee and total exports of green coffee grew last year by 2.6 per cent.

In terms of quantity produced, the biggest coffee variety is arabica, of which a little under 63 million sacks were produced between August 2008 and July 2009. The second most popular coffee variety is robusta, of which 35.08 million sacks were produced in the same period.

“The next coffee harvest will be a record high, as weather conditions in Brazil and other places have been favourable,” Esteve predicts.

Paulig investing in Russia

Although many purchases are postponed during a recession, the enjoyment of coffee is still an important part of Finns’ everyday life and their moments of pampering. The level of coffee consumption has held steady. In Russia, the overall market for coffee has declined in the economic downturn, but sales of roasted coffee have risen.

“Paulig aims for growth in the Baltic and Russian markets and we have started building a roastery in Russia. The foundation stone of the roastery, in Tver, Borovlevo, will be laid on Thursday 8 October and the new roastery will be completed towards the end of next year,” says Gustav Paulig’s Managing Director Pekka Pirinen.

“Paulig’s roots are firmly in Finland. The modern and energy-efficient roastery in Vuosaari completed this summer will employ many of the top professionals in the business. In other words, Finns will be able to continue to enjoy quality coffee roasted in their own country,” Pirinen points out.

Further information:

Leena Miettinen, Communications Manager, Gustav Paulig Ltd, Tel. +358 9 319 8364

ICP: www.coffee-partners.org

7 October 2009

Paulig’s coffee roastery project in Russia takes a step forwards

The plans for the implementation of the project are complete and the transaction for the plot of land has been effected. The project can be started up when the construction permits have been received. It is estimated that the roastery will be operational in the first half of 2011.

“We have good reasons to get construction started. I believe that availability of constructors and materials has improved and prices have become to more realistic level. When the economic upswing gets under way we will have a good basis to go ahead at full speed. A local roastery will substantially improve our competitiveness in Russia and the CIS, which we see as very potential future markets,” says Gustav Paulig’s Managing Director Pekka Pirinen.

Gustav Paulig Ltd’s new roastery in Finland will be completed in autumn 2009.

More information

Managing Director Denis Smirnov, OOO Paulig Coffee (Russia), tel.+7 495 662 3960

Managing Director Pekka Pirinen, Gustav Paulig Ltd, tel + 358 93198 247 (Finland)

26 May 2009

Paulig’s new roastery is now at roof height

Paulig’s roastery project, which is large in scale not only by Finnish standards but also globally, is moving ahead on schedule. The topping-out party for the building under construction in Vuosaari harbour business park will be held on Wednesday 18 June. The exterior of the building is already taking shape. The most striking part, the green coffee silos, will form a landmark 40 metres high above sea level.

Paulig’s new roastery, scheduled to go into production in 2009, is a major investment in Finland and the Helsinki region. It guarantees that Finns will continue to drink high-quality coffee, roasted in Finland, that matches their flavour preferences. In addition to Finland, coffee from the Vuosaari roastery will be exported to countries including Russia and the Baltic region, growing markets for Paulig.

“The decision on building a new roastery and its location in Finland was taken in summer 2006. Crucial factors in the decision were both our skilled personnel in Vuosaari and the excellent logistical location of the harbour. The new roastery will uphold the traditions of Finnish coffee-drinking with state-of-the-art methods,” says Managing Director Pekka Pirinen ofGustav Paulig Ltd.

A unique project

Minna Forsström of Gustav Paulig Ltd, who has led the project from the drawing-board stage, is happy with the progress on schedule of a construction project. “At the end of last year, we signed contracts for the largest process equipment procurements, including the roasting machinery, and the procurements for the packaging room are now on the home straight. The largest single section of the building, the green coffee silos, is currently reaching completion. All in all, roasteries are not built very often, and as far as I know, our job is today the largest in the world,” says Project Director Forsström.

The new roastery will turn out more than 100 million packets of coffee a year. The building will also provide offices for the personnel of Gustav Paulig Ltd, Paulig Pro Ltd, Paulig Ltd and Santa Maria Finland Ltd – more than 200 people. The personnel will move into the new facilities in autumn 2009, when the present roastery will be wound up. Paulig, along with the City of Helsinki and local associations, has scheduled planning permission for seaside residential estates in the area.

Further information:

Project Director Minna Forsström, Gustav Paulig Ltd

+358 40 702 9896,

Communications Manager Leena Miettinen, Gustav Paulig Ltd

+358 40 562 7302,

Background material and photos for the press release can be downloaded from www.paulig.fi/uusipaahtimo.

Paulig signs preliminary contract for purchase of plot for roastery in Russia

Today Paulig signed a preliminary contract for the purchase of a plot comprising roughly five hectares of land in Borovlevo, Tver. The final contract will be signed within a few months. At the same occasion, Paulig signed a letter of intent with the Tver authorities to ensure that the regional administration supports the implementation of the plan. Tver is about 170 kilometres from Moscow in the direction of St Petersburg along good transport links.

If all goes according to plan, the Russian roastery will be completed during 2009. The value of the first phase of the investment is roughly 12 million euros. The roastery will provide about 60 jobs initially.

“The construction of a roastery in Russia will be important for our competitiveness. Roasting in Russia is worthwhile, as there is high import duty on ready-made coffee products. A local roastery will make deliveries more flexible and speed up the turnaround of products. Exports to the CIS countries will also become competitive,” Pekka Pirinen declares.

“We are currently building a new roastery in Finland. This will serve primarily Finland and the Baltic countries but also the market in the rest of the EU. The construction of the Russian roastery will not affect the need for personnel at the Vuosaari roastery.”

Further information:

Managing Director Pekka Pirinen, Gustav Paulig Ltd, Tel. +358 400 215433

The Tver region (Тверь) is at the confluence of the Volga and Tvertsa Rivers about 170 kilometres north of Moscow. The city has a population of roughly 450,000, some of whom are Tver Karelians. From 1931 until 1990 Tver was known by the name Kalinin.

The Paulig Group

The Paulig Group, founded in 1876, is a corporation noted for its brand products and focuses on coffee, seasonings and international food, and it operates in the markets of Northern Europe, the Baltic countries, and Russia and its neighbouring regions. The Group’s net sales are roughly 262 million euros and it has 570 employees.

Coffee business is the responsibility of Gustav Paulig Ltd, Finland’s leading company in the coffee sector. Its brand products in Finland include Juhla Mokka, Presidentti, Brazil and Paulig Mundo as well as the cold coffee beverage Frezza and the chocolate drink Tazza. The coffee brands in Russia and the Baltic countries include Paulig Classic and Paulig President. From now on, Gustav Paulig Ltd will make Paulig Espresso Originale coffee from coffee beans certified by the UTZ CERTIFIED organisation. Certification will enable consumers to be assured that their coffee has been responsibly produced. The coffee beans used in UTZ certified products can be traced to the plantation using the Paulig website (www.paulig.fi).

High-quality, soft Paulig Espresso Originale is roasted with sweet Brazilian and selected Central American and Asia coffees. A pinch of Robusta gives the flavour of Espresso Originale body and strength.

The Paulig Institute's Barista Trainer Kimmo Nieminen believes that the soft taste of Paulig Espresso Originale coffee makes it easily approachable. Its flavour is a perfect balance of coffee acidity, bitterness and sweetness.

Paulig’s other responsibility certified product is Paulig Mundo coffee. This is a full-flavoured filter coffee suited to Finnish tastes.

UTZ CERTIFIED – welfare, professional skills and transparency

UTZ CERTIFIED is a worldwide, independently monitored certification programme – the only one of its kind specialising exclusively in coffee – which checks and verifies the responsible production of coffee. The plantations in the worldwide programme are committed to taking good care of the people working on them and their families, the environment, and the quality of the coffee. You can find further information on the UTZ CERTIFIED programme on the website www.utzcertified.org

UTZ CERTIFIED was previously known as Utz Kapeh.

Gustav Paulig Ltd’s subsidiary Paulig Pro Ltd has acquired the issued stock of Coffee Please Suomi Oy. Coffeeplease’s business sector is to sell coffee and other grocery items related to the coffee sector as well as selling and leasing coffee-making equipment, accessories and peripherals to corporate clients. The company also provides design and training services for the café and restaurant business. Coffeeplease’s turnover in the financial year ending in September 2007 was 6 million euros and it had 45 employees. The business newspaper Kauppalehti Optio listed Coffeeplease as Finland’s 8th most profitable growth company in November.

By this transaction, Paulig aims to underpin its position on the growing market for speciality coffees and workplace coffee provision. According to Managing Director Pekka Pirinen of Gustav Paulig Ltd, Coffeeplease will considerably boost Paulig’s offering. “The company will be able to provide our customers with coffee-making equipment or even with a total coffee provision service if preferred.”<s></s>

The founders of the company will stay with it to develop operations. Jani Penttilä, who is continuing as Managing Director, is happy with the arrival of a strong player in the coffee sector. ”By leveraging Gustav Paulig Ltd’s resources and customer contacts, Coffeeplease will have the opportunity to strengthen its market position in Finland and expand operations to the Nordic countries and Russia."

Further information:

Gustav Paulig Ltd, Managing Director Pekka Pirinen, Tel. +358 400 215 433

Coffee Please Suomi Oy, Managing Director Jani Penttilä, Tel. +358 41 541 5558

4.12.2007

Coffee consumption growing globally

More coffee is being drunk in traditional coffee countries and by tea-drinking nations alike. The global output of green coffee this year will be approximately 118 million sacks and consumption will total roughly 125 million sacks. Of the coffee producer countries, Brazil has retained its leading place, and the Asian countries are rapidly stepping up their percentages. Production regions and conditions in them may undergo major upheavals in the near future due to climate change.

This information was revealed at Paulig’s annual Coffee Seminar, held on 6 November, where the main speaker was Managing Director Jan Lühmann of the international coffee firm VOLCAFE Switzerland Ltd. According to Lühmann, the major producers like Brazil and the African countries are now consuming more coffee than before. The countries of Eastern Europe, like Russia and Ukraine, are also forecast to become big consumers of coffee. Eastern Europe currently consumes about 8.7% of the global coffee output.

“Coffee has become a consumer commodity for the whole world, not just the Western Hemisphere. For example, the Japanese and Koreans, who are seen as tea drinkers, are coming over to coffee,” Lühmann reports.

Of coffee grades, output of Robusta has grown. Cheaper Robusta is used in instant and some other coffees and it is mostly grown in Asian countries.

“The changeover to coffee very often takes place through instant coffee. Consumption of this has grown in the so-called new coffee-drinking countries. This partly explains the expansion in sales of Robusta. Arabica is still the variety for high-quality coffees. Roughly sixty per cent of the coffee produced in the world is Arabica,” Lühmann sums up.

Speciality coffees, takeaway coffees and advances in home coffee-makers have become rising trends in the world of coffee. Consumers are calling more loudly for coffee of high quality, so flavour and quality are top factors in the choice of coffee. Lühmann forecasts that so-called medium-quality coffees will fade away and high-quality roasters like Paulig will fare better than before.

Paulig’s position has strengthened on the Finnish retail market. Paulig is also dynamically expanding its operations into neighbouring markets. Exports to the Baltic countries and Russia account for roughly one sixth of the company’s output and the quantitative growth on the previous year is 15%. In the Baltic countries and Russia, Paulig holds second place in the roasted coffee market in terms of volume of sales. Paulig’s share of Finland’s coffee exports in 2006 was 83%.

Coffee-growing regions may undergo radical upheaval due to climate change in the decades ahead. Higher-quality coffees thrive best in highland regions, where the climate ranges from subtropical to temperate and the temperature 15-25 degrees. The most favourable growing zone is forecast to rise in altitude by about 38 centimetres per year´.

“Torrential rain and hurricanes will erode the soil more than before. Conditions of coffee growers may deteriorate with more and more unpredictable weather. Also, coffee cultivation may be threatened in the future by an increase in the output of energy biomass,” Lühmann observed.

One way to support sustainable development is to use responsibility certified coffees. Paulig launched its first UTZ certified coffee brand, Paulig Mundo, a year ago. Now Paulig Espresso Originale coffee is also made from UTZ certified beans. UTZ CERTIFIED is a global, non-aligned and independently monitored coffee certification programme which ensures and verifies the responsible production of coffee. Rapidly growing UTZ Certified is already in use in several European countries and the United States.

UTZ certified green coffee is obtainable not only from small plantations but also from large coffee estates and all the production regions in which Paulig buys its green coffee. We are now achieving sufficiently large quantities of green coffee and ensuring the high quality of coffee blends as well as their suitability to the consumers’ tastes.

Other responsibility certifications in use in the world include Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance and 4C. For further information on certifications, see Jan Lühmann’s talk at www.paulig.fi/kahviseminaari/.

Further information

Pekka Pirinen, Managing Director

Foundation stone of Paulig’s new coffee roastery laid

Foundation stone of Paulig’s new coffee roastery laid

The foundation stone for Paulig’s coffee roastery, scheduled for completion in 2009, was laid today in the Vuosaari district of Helsinki. The most important industrial investment in the company’s history secures the retention of manufacturing work in Finland. The coffee roastery, which is being built next to the new Vuosaari harbour, will serve both Finland and the export markets. The roastery will send out more than 100 million packets of coffee a year.

The construction of the coffee roastery in the Vuosaari harbour business park got under way in July and is now in full swing. Paulig’s coffee roastery, which is exceptionally large even by global standards, will be completed in 2009. The building is designed by Tommila Architects Ltd and the main contractor is Lemcon Ltd.

“The roastery investment proves that Paulig is confident of the survival of the coffeedrinking culture in Finland and in its strong growth in neighbouring regions. The new building will secure the best possible facilities and working conditions for our skilled personnel, and Vuosaari harbour provides an excellent logistical location for efficient roastery operations,” reports Paulig Group’s Executive Chairman Bertel Paulig.

The quality goals for the almost EUR 120 million project have been set high. “The assessment and advance planning for various alternatives have been performed unusually carefully, the process is energy-efficient and environmental aspects have been figured into all the solutions. It’s also essential that the roastery has the look and feel of modern Paulig,” says Project Director Minna Forsström.

The roastery’s output capacity is over 40 million kilos a year, and if demand increases it easily can be boosted by expanding the production process and extending the building. The building will also provide office facilities for the personnel of Gustav Paulig Ltd, Paulig Ltd and Santa Maria Finland Ltd – more than 200 people.

Of the EUR 120 million total costs of the project, the Paulig Group will finance the production process and the owner family’s investment company (Oy The English Tearoom Ab) will finance the actual building. The plot of the present roastery will be freed up for residential construction after the move.

130-year-old Paulig has been a Helsinki-based firm from the start. After many years in the Katajanokka district of Helsinki, the coffee roastery moved to Vuosaari 40 years ago in 1967. The partnership between Paulig and Helsinki goes back a long way.

“I’m happy that, after operating in Helsinki for so long, Paulig will be able to stay here in the future. This is important both for the capital city’s image and for its business enterprise. The people in Vuosaari also have an important stake in continuing business operations and keeping jobs,” said Helsinki’s Mayor Jussi Pajunen, who made a speech at the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone.

Further information:

Project Director Minna Forsström, Gustav Paulig Ltd, +358 40 702 9896,

Communications Manager Leena Miettinen, Paulig Ltd, +358 40 562 7302,

You can download the release as well as background information and images related to the subject from the website www.paulig.fi/uusipaahtimo.

20.9.2007

Paulig’s roastery project

In Paulig’s coffee roastery project, both production and office facilities are being built at Vuosaari harbour, and operations will move into these in 2009.
New certification system for responsibly produced coffee comes to Finland

The first coffees verified by the UTZ CERTIFIED organisation are now available to Finnish consumers. “The certification programme helps farmers to become professionals in coffee cultivation and to produce quality coffee. The plantations also take good care of people and the environment,” reports the organisation’s agronomist, Kamau Kuria from Kenya.

UTZ CERTIFIED was started in 2002 and responsibly produced coffee certified by the organisation is already being drunk in several European countries, the USA and Japan.

“UTZ aims for long-term improvement in coffee production methods in terms of both quality and responsibility. By complying with the strict guidelines required for certification, the grower is able to improve the quality and quantity of his coffee harvest. Quality coffee commands a higher price on the market and the grower also receives a payment for certification. For the consumers, certification is a guarantee of quality coffee which has been produced responsibly and with growers they can easily trace on the internet. The rapid expansion of UTZ shows the programme is working,” says UTZ CERTIFIED’s Manager Marketing & Communications Business Support Henrike Offeringa.

Agronomist Kamau Kuria, who represents the organisation in Africa and India, sees how certification benefits growers every day. “A better harvest means a better income for the growers and an opportunity to improve living conditions for the entire community. The transparent system gives growers a chance to find out who buys their coffee and what kind of production methods are expected of them. The understanding brought by the knowledge of how important their input is to the coffee production chain boosts desire to commit to our programme, which nurtures quality, the environment and the community. When a grower earns certification, his pride also increases in his product.
