Permits and commitments related to coffee production

Gustav Paulig has an ISO 22000 standard-compliant food industry management system, for which certification was granted in December 2008. Compliance with the standard is verified annually with external audits.

Gustav Paulig has an ISO 14001 standard-compliant environmental system, for which certification was granted in June 2004. Compliance with the standard in environmental activities is verified annually with external audits.

Self-supervision plan:

The City of Helsinki gave its decision on Gustav Paulig Ltd’s self-supervision in November 1996. Self-supervision is based on HACCP (Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points). www.hel.fi/ymk

Environmental permit:

Helsinki Environment Centre granted an environmental permit for Paulig’s new roastery in 2008, and this is in effect indefinitely. The operations and environmental impacts of the coffee roastery are reported annually and the Environment Centre may audit the roastery’s operation as it wishes.

Evacuation plan:

The Vuosaari roastery’s evacuation plan is updated annually, most recently in 2011. In Tver, a similar evacuation plan is in effect, in compliance with Russian law. The evacuation plan familiarised the production plant’s personnel with fire-fighting and accident prevention.

European Contract for Coffee (ECC):

Paulig complies with the ECC rules in all its purchase contracts for green coffee. www.ecf-coffee.org

Certificate of equivalence:

Paulig’s products fulfil the exporting requirements of Gosstandard of Russia. Paulig has a GOST certificate of equivalence for exports to Ukraine. www.fi.sgs.com/fi

McDonald’s carries out annual SQMS (Supplier Quality Management System) audits to verify its suppliers’ food safety and quality credentials. In autumn 2011, Paulig was awarded an A grade, the highest possible, for its September audit. McDonald’s also regularly audits corporate responsibility issues, both in the form of the suppliers’ self-assessments and through external audits. No discrepancies were found in the responsibility audit held in February 2012.

Responsibility certifications

UTZ CERTIFIED is a worldwide certification programme for sustainable development. The compliance of Paulig’s UTZ CERTIFIED products is verified by annual external audits. www.utzcertified.com

Fairtrade certification was created to improve the position in international trade of smallholders and large plantations’ workers in developing countries. FLO-CERT certifies Paulig’s operations annually in compliance with Fairtrade certification. www.fairtrade.net

The production of Organic products is regulated by EU organic legislation. The monitoring of organic products embraces the entire procurement chain. In Finland, supervision is in the hands of Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira. www.evira.fi, www.organic-farming.europa.eu
