Opening Tver has substantially reduced transport emissions

The opening of the new roastery in Russia has considerably reduced Paulig’s transport emissions. During 2011, transports of completed coffee products from Finland to Russia were reduced by 98 per cent. Also, it was possible to close a warehouse for completed products in Moscow as a result of the start-up of the Tver roastery.

Tverin avaaminen vähensi merkittävästi kuljetuspäästöjä

Purchases of green coffee for Tver are handled from Finland but deliveries go direct to Russia. Sending green coffee direct from the countries of origin is considerably more environmentally friendly than transporting completed products from Vuosaari, as green coffee is loaded very compactly. When green coffee is roasted, it almost doubles in volume.

At the moment, Kotka in Finland is the main port used. From there the coffee containers are taken by lorry to Tver. The adoption, feasibility and efficiency of the port of St Petersburg is currently under investigation. Road transport handled by Paulig itself has been found the most efficient method of transport between the port and the roastery.

Paulig sends products to the Baltic countries direct from its warehouse in Vuosaari. Every effort is made to fully utilise load space, for example by combining loads for distribution to different customers. This cost-effective distribution model cuts down on extra stages of transport and conserves the environment.
