New tools for growers adapting to climate change

In February 2013, a conference of the African Coffee Association AFCA announced a new, open-to-all internet application Coffee & Climate Toolbox. The almost 2,000 attendees at the conference were enthusiastic about the application and the prospects it provides to share expertise globally. The aim of the Coffee & Climate project is to help coffee smallholders to adapt to climate change.

Created in cooperation by Paulig and five other family companies in the coffee sector, the toolbox contains collected methods based on best practices in the coffee sector, guidelines and training materials. The result of almost two years of work, the Coffee & Climate Toolbox provides free access to the latest know-how. The application is constantly under development as information on proven practices is collected in it systematically. At the same time, the expertise of the entire coffee sector is promoted.

Coffee growers can use the application to assess their situation, to search for recommended action and guidelines, and to find practical ways to promote their livelihood and adapt to climate change. Information is available on both proven and new, innovative methods. The toolbox also serves as a forum in which new research data and crowers’ know-how meet.
