Energy-efficient roasting

Paulig’s roastery in Vuosaari, which was started up in 2009, and the plant in Tver, which came on stream in 2011, were built with state-of-the-art technology and with the benefits of ecological thinking.

Energiatehokasta paahtamistaThe new manufacturing technology guarantees energy-efficiency, and durable building materials reduce the operational environmental impacts for the entire lifecycle of the roastery.

At the Vuosaari roastery, environmental viewpoints have been figured in all the way from the interiors to the outer walls. Manufacturing uses 24% less natural gas per tonne of coffee than the former roastery. Annualised, this means roughly 800 tonnes less of carbon dioxide emissions.

The interference of the Vuosaari roastery to nearby residents has been minimised as it is in the harbour zone, separated from residential areas. In accordance with our environmental licence, an odour panel operates within the company, checking the smell of coffee on a regular basis at several measurement points. We report the results onwards to the environmental authorities. We also take part in the WWF’s Green Office programme, the aim of which is to reduce the environmental impact of office work.

The same environmentally friendly working methods and principles are applied at the new roastery in Tver as in Vuosaari. The Russian authorities have granted the roastery all necessary operating permits in accordance with the scheduled timetable. The introduction of an environmental system is planned in 2013.
