Special attention paid to the environmental impacts of transport

Streamlining logistics is one of the key development projects for the entire Paulig Group. The aim is to standardise the assessment and approval procedures for suppliers in all the Group companies.

The environmentally friendliness and efficiency of the transport chain is improved by route planning and by developing transport methods.

Shipping is the most efficient way to transport coffee. The increase in sizes of oceangoing ships has considerably reduced the emissions of transport and energy consumption per tonne of coffee. Most (83%) of the coffee bound for Paulig is packed in bulk containers. Each of these contains one large nylon sack which holds roughly 20,000 kilos of green coffee.

On average, three shipments of green coffee arrive at Vuosaari harbour a week. In 2011, Paulig imported a total of 2,390 container loads of green coffee to Vuosaari. The location of the new roastery immediately adjacent to the harbour has meant the elimination of more than 2,000 containers of coffee from road transport in Helsinki each year.

The most direct route from roastery to shop

The transport of completed coffee products to the retail chains’ warehouses in Finland is mostly handled by the customers’ transport partners. The products are packed for transport on recyclable EUR or ½-EUR pallets, which are dimensioned for an optimal fit inside the vehicles. Paulig’s delivery service meticulously plans the packing of loads and the transport routes to minimise the number of transport batches.
